HISTORY

Dermal fillers have revolutionized the field of cosmetic industry and have become a common aesthetic treatment for several cosmetic concerns.

The first known injectable agent was paraffin but its use was abandoned after complications such as migration (movement into the surrounding tissue) and granuloma formation (small area of inflammation) was reported.

In 1981, bovine collagen was the first agent to be approved by the FDA for cosmetic injections and since then many filler agents have been developed and approved by the FDA for cosmetic use.

Based on their longevity fillers are classified as temporary, semi-permanent and permanent with temporary fillers lasting less than a year, semi-permanent fillers for up to 1-2 years and permanent fillers lasting longer than 2 years.

Temporary fillers can lead to repeated injections over time and this could be perceived as a costly option compared to a permanent filler. Although the choice of permanent fillers may seem appealing, permanent substances do not adjust to the natural skin and bone changes that occur over time from the ageing process and can lead to complications that are often more difficult to treat than temporary fillers.

The Aesthetic Doctor will carry out a consultation with you to find out your concerns and goals. The skin is then thoroughly cleansed to remove any make-up, followed by a sterile wipe. FAQ

Dermal fillers treatment is ideal for those who would like to hydrate, plump, restore and enhance facial features without going under the knife.

As we get older, levels of hyaluronic acid deplete and our bodies stop producing collagen and elastin, both of which contribute to the youthful look. Dermal fillers work by boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, revitalise and add volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look.

Dermal fillers are used to treat a range of skin concerns, including lack of volume, deep wrinkles and folds. Popular areas to add volume and fullness include the lips, cheeks and the bridge of the nose. For smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and plumping, popular treatment areas include around the forehead, tear troughs (under the eyes), mouth, jawline and chin.

Every client seeking injectable treatments with dermal fillers will be given an in-depth consultation to set up the expectations and to ensure that risks are minimised. Our clinic is a safe medical environment and your treatment will be carried out only by highly qualified doctors or nurses.

Temporary side effects that are completely normal after facial injections can include: redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection site. These reactions are generally mild to moderate and usually disappear shortly after the treatment.

The procedure may involve some light pain or discomfort whilst the filler is being injected into the area, but this can be minimised by applying an anaesthetic cream before the treatment. Unlike other procedures such as surgical face lifts, dermal fillers require no cuts, incisions or stitches to be made and the treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

After the treatment you should avoid applying any make-up, heat treatments for a minimum of 48 hours such as a sauna or steam, exercise for 7 days after the treatment. You can gentle wash and moisturise your face after the treatment, however avoid facials and massage for at least 10 days after the treatment.

Results begin to show immediately after treatment and can last up to 12 months, depending on the product used and the area treated. A top-up treatment might be required every 6-12 months.

Results vary between individuals. It depends on how the body reacts and which hyaluronic acid is used, but most dermal fillers will last between 6 to 18 months.
