HISTORY

The clinical efficacy of the PRP was discovered in the early 1970’s when haematologist first used PRP for thrombocytopenia (low blood platelets count) patients and in 1980’s PRP was used for maxillofacial surgery. Since then PRP had been extensively used in many clinical and surgical fields such as orthopaedics, dentistry, wound healing, urology, gynaecology and ophthalmology.

PRP’s uses and applications in the field of dermatology has been increasing over the years. This is due to its role in the regeneration of tissue, scar revision, healing of wounds, skin rejuvenation, and some forms of hair loss.

process

Your specialist will firstly carry out a consultation with you to find out your skin concerns and goals. Your skin is then cleansed to remove any make-up or impurities from the surface of the skin.

Blood is first drawn from the arm, and then placed into a centrifuge which rapidly spins the blood sample, prompting it to separate into 2 components (the plasma and the cellular layer which contains both red and white blood cells.)

The concentrated PRP layer is then harvested and reinjected into the area that needs to be treated.

FAQ

PRP treatment is ideal for anyone wanting to improve the health of their skin or stimulate growth on the scalp. Using your body’s own platelets, this is a great option for those with sensitive skin as this reduces the risk of an allergic reaction.

Plasma is composed of water and proteins, and it provides a means for red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to circulate through the body. Platelets cause blood to clot and contain growth healing factors. By injecting a concentrated amount into the treatment area, the growth factors stimulate and repair the skin or scalp.

PRP can address hair loss, scars, reduce stretch marks, crow’s feet, frown lines and will brighten, rejuvenate and rehydrate the skin even after the first treatment.

PRP is a safe treatment option and there is no risk of an allergic reaction since it uses your own blood. However, because of the injection itself there is a risk of infection, bleeding and nerve injury but this is very rare.

Clients usually describe it as a minimal discomfort. If required, a topical numbing cream can be applied to the area before carrying out the PRP treatment to ensure that any pain is minimised.

You may feel a little tender and swollen for a few hours, but you will be able to return to your activities immediately following PRP treatment.

Your practitioner will determine your treatment protocol according to your skin/ scalp condition. While responses to treatment vary, most people will require 3-6 sessions. Each treatment is spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart. There is no limit to the number of treatments you can have.

You will start to notice an improvement in skin texture and tone within 3-4 weeks after your first treatment. Full collagen regeneration takes up to three months. Reduction in hair loss is noticeable within 8 weeks and hair re-growth is seen 3-6 months after the last treatment.

For 3 months following treatment, your PRP facial will continue working to boost and regenerate collagen in the skin. After 3 months, the collagen regeneration has been reached, however you may continue to notice the benefits of the PRP treatment for as long as 2 years.
